Connecting With Medtronic: External Research and Early Technologies
Innosphere Ventures invites you to our next Innovation After Hours virtual event featuring Medtronic, the global leader in medical technology!
The Medtronic Cranial and Spinal Technologies business unit, located in Louisville, Colorado, engages in collaborative research and development with innovators at academic institutions and companies of all scales (from “A” to “Zeiss”) through its External Research and Early Technologies (ERET) team.
Medtronic’s team will describe examples of early engagement leading to commercial clinical applications, which demonstrates their commitment to improving lives through medical technologies, services and solutions, followed by ample time for Q&A and great conversation.

The presentation will highlight the two sides of a collaborative engagement – technical perspective and business perspective:
- Timothy J. (Tim) Schaewe, D.Sc., Principal Research Engineer and Technical Fellow with the Medtronic Cranial and Spinal Technologies division, will speak on the technical perspective. >>> He received his Doctor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 1991, specializing in magnetic resonance imaging. Between those two points in time and space, he has trained neural networks to read postal envelope images at IBM, started a company and discovered the meaning of the expression “an idea well ahead of its time…”, learned a whole lot about software engineering, neuroscience and human subjects clinical research “on the job”, and has found his place in the world at the 4-way intersection of academia and industry, and medicine and engineering.
- Leslie Holton, PhD, Director of External Research and Early Technologies for the Medtronic Cranial and Spinal Technologies operating unit, will speak on the business perspective. >>> She came to Medtronic after earning her PhD from The Ohio State University focused on haptic modelling for virtual reality-based surgeon training (an idea that was both 20 years to early and also not ready for prime time today).
We are excited to have Medtronic keynote our Innovation After Hours event and hope you can join!
